SUMMARY:Black Resistance Month (Black August)
DESCRIPTION:Observed every August in the United States\, Black Resistance
Month — long carried as Black August — holds the memory of Black freedom
  struggle: rebellion\, political imprisonment\, study\, fasting\, and dis
ciplined care for one another. It grew out of the California prison movem
ent of the 1970s and the commemoration of George Jackson\, Jonathan Jacks
 on\, W.L. Nolen\, Khatari Gaulden\, and the many organizers whose names n
ever reached a headline.\n\nAugust carries a longer inheritance as well:
the Haitian Revolution's Bois Caïman gathering (August 1791)\, the Nat Tu
rner rebellion (August 1831)\, Emancipation Day across the British-coloni
zed Caribbean (August 1\, 1834)\, the founding of the Universal Negro Imp
 rovement Association's August conventions\, and the 1965 Watts uprising.\
n\nPer-Ankh marks the month with study rather than spectacle: reading pat
hways on Black political thought\, resistance histories across the U.S.\,
  Caribbean\, and continent\, and family-appropriate materials for young s
cholars. Ma'at governs the observance — truth\, balance\, right relations
hip. We name the violence honestly without turning it into entertainment\
, and we center the people who organized\, taught\, and survived.\nRegion

SUMMARY:National Black Business Month
DESCRIPTION:Observed every August in the United States\, National Black B
usiness Month calls for sustained patronage\, capital\, and cooperation w
ith Black-owned enterprises. It was established in 2004 by engineer Frede
rick E. Jordan and historian John William Templeton to confront the finan
cing and contracting barriers Black business owners face.\n\nThe month si
ts inside a much longer diasporic economic lineage: mutual aid societies
and burial funds\, Marcus Garvey's Negro Factories Corporation and Black
 Star Line\, the Greenwood District in Tulsa\, Durham's Parrish Street\, C
aribbean susu and West African esusu rotating-savings systems\, and the c
ooperative economics W.E.B. Du Bois and Jessica Gordon Nembhard documente
d as ordinary Black practice rather than novelty.\n\nPer-Ankh marks the m
onth with directory work rather than promotion: Black-owned bookstores\,
 foodways\, farms\, presses\, and cultural institutions\, held to Ma'at —
truth\, balance\, right relationship. Buying is only one part\; the deepe
r practice is cooperation\, ownership\, and continuity across generations

DESCRIPTION:Barack Hussein Obama II was born on 4 August 1961 in Honolulu

e is marked here as a point of record in U.S. and diasporic political his

SUMMARY:Montgomery Riverfront Confrontation (2023)
DESCRIPTION:On 5 August 2023\, at the Montgomery Riverfront dock in Montg
 omery\, Alabama\, a Black riverboat co-captain directing a pleasure boat
to clear the Harriott II's docking space was attacked by a group of white
boaters. Bystanders — mostly Black families gathered for the evening — m
oved in to defend him\, and the confrontation was recorded from several a
ngles and carried worldwide within hours. Charges followed against severa
l of the initial assailants. The site itself is layered: the same riverfr
