SUMMARY:Computer Science Education Week
DESCRIPTION:Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek\, December 7–13\, 2
 026) is an annual call to action to inspire students to learn computer sc
ience and to advocate for equity in computing education\, held each year
during the week of Grace Hopper's birthday (December 9\, 1906)\, inventor
of the first compiler. Founded in 2009 by the Association for Computing
Machinery\, it is now led by the Computer Science Teachers Association\,
and the Hour of Code — in 2026 the Hour of AI — invites every classroom t
o take one hands-on computing step during the week.\n\nFor the African di
aspora\, computing is a heritage discipline\, not a new arrival. Kemetic
scribes worked precise mathematics centuries before the Rhind Mathematica
l Papyrus was written down\; the Ishango bone of Central Africa ranks amo
ng the oldest mathematical artifacts known. In our own era\, Dorothy Vaug
han led NASA's West Area Computing unit and taught herself FORTRAN\; Kath
erine Johnson verified the orbital paths that carried astronauts to the M
oon and back\; Mary Jackson and Annie Easley computed the flight paths an
d energy systems of the space age\; Dr. Gladys West's calculations shaped
the satellite geodesy behind GPS\; Clarence 'Luzzy' Ellis became the fir
st African American to earn a doctorate in computer science (1969) and he
lped pioneer transactional databases\; Dr. Mark Dean co-created the IBM P
C architecture and the color-graphics adapter\; and today Dr. Joy Buolamw
ini and Dr. Timnit Gebru keep computing honest about who it serves. Durin
g CSEdWeek\, homes and classrooms across the diaspora can sit at the mach
ine and continue that lineage — because the next compiler\, the next algo
rithm\, and the next guardian of truth in code can come from any of our c
 hildren.\nRegion: Global\nSource: https://www.csedweek.org/about\nMore: h
