SUMMARY:National Autism Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:April is National Autism Awareness Month\, a time to increase
understanding\, acceptance\, and support for autistic individuals and th
eir families. In the Black community\, autism awareness carries particula
r urgency: Black children are diagnosed with autism on average 3 years la
ter than white children\, and are more likely to be misdiagnosed with beh
avioral disorders first. Cultural stigma\, lack of access to culturally c
ompetent providers\, and systemic healthcare inequities contribute to del
ayed diagnosis and intervention. Black families often navigate autism wit
h fewer resources while confronting intersecting barriers of race and dis
ability. Organizations like the Color of Autism Foundation\, founded by C
amille Proctor\, work specifically to address disparities in autism diagn
osis\, treatment\, and support within communities of color. This month ho
nors Black autistic individuals\, their families\, and the advocates push
ing for equitable care\, representation\, and acceptance.\nRegion: North
