DESCRIPTION:Observed every August in the United States\, Black Resistance
  Month — long carried as Black August — holds the memory of Black freedom
  struggle: rebellion\, political imprisonment\, study\, fasting\, and dis
 ciplined care for one another. It grew out of the California prison movem
 ent of the 1970s and the commemoration of George Jackson\, Jonathan Jacks
 on\, W.L. Nolen\, Khatari Gaulden\, and the many organizers whose names n
 ever reached a headline.\n\nAugust carries a longer inheritance as well: 
 the Haitian Revolution's Bois Caïman gathering (August 1791)\, the Nat Tu
 rner rebellion (August 1831)\, Emancipation Day across the British-coloni
 zed Caribbean (August 1\, 1834)\, the founding of the Universal Negro Imp
 rovement Association's August conventions\, and the 1965 Watts uprising.\
 n\nPer-Ankh marks the month with study rather than spectacle: reading pat
 hways on Black political thought\, resistance histories across the U.S.\,
  Caribbean\, and continent\, and family-appropriate materials for young s
 cholars. Ma'at governs the observance — truth\, balance\, right relations
 hip. We name the violence honestly without turning it into entertainment\
 , and we center the people who organized\, taught\, and survived.\nRegion
