DESCRIPTION:January 1\, 1863. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emanci
 pation Proclamation\, declaring that all persons held as slaves in Confed
 erate-held territory "are\, and henceforward shall be free."\n\nThe Procl
 amation was a wartime measure that did not by itself end U.S. slavery (th
 e Thirteenth Amendment\, ratified December 6\, 1865\, did that). It exclu
 ded the border states and Confederate areas already under Union control. 
 But it transformed the Civil War into a war of emancipation\, opened Unio
 n ranks to Black soldiers\, and was met across Black America with watch-n
 ight services that have continued every December 31 since.\n\nRead it alo
 ngside the testimonies that surround it: the Black abolitionists\, the ma
 roon communities\, the self-emancipated thousands who walked\, ran\, and
