SUMMARY:National Nurses Week — Honoring Black\, Caribbean & African Nursi
 ng Lineage
DESCRIPTION:National Nurses Week (May 6–12) closes on May 12\, the birthd
ay of Florence Nightingale\, but the deeper lineage Per-Ankh honors is th
e Black\, Caribbean\, and African nursing tradition: Mary Eliza Mahoney (
the first Black professionally trained nurse in the U.S.\, New England Ho
spital for Women and Children\, 1879)\; Adah Belle Thoms\, who fought to
integrate the U.S. Army Nurse Corps\; Estelle Massey Osborne\, the first
Black instructor at a U.S. nursing school\; and the National Association
of Colored Graduate Nurses\, founded in 1908 to organize Black nurses exc
luded from the American Nurses Association until 1951. This week also hon
ors Caribbean nurse organizers who staffed the British and U.S. health sy
stems through the Windrush generation\, and African nurse-midwives whose
community-based practice predates and outlasts colonial medicine. Healing
in the African tradition has always been relational\, ethical\, and comm
unal — an applied form of Ma'at.\nRegion: Global\, Global Diaspora\nSourc
