Sovereignty was not granted\; it was seized.\n\n18 63 — Emancipation Proclamation (United States). Issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1\, 1863 in the third year of the U.S. Civil War\, the Procla mation freed those held in Confederate territory. It followed — it did no t lead — the long Black-led struggle: maroons\, the Underground Railroad\ , slave revolts\, abolitionist organizing\, and the 200\,000 Black soldie rs who fought for the Union.\n\nJanuary 1 (annual) — Imani (Faith).
